Banff Marriage Requirements: Banff National Park

Elopements

Dreaming of saying your vows surrounded by the breathtaking peaks of Banff National Park? Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a grand celebration, it’s important to understand the Banff marriage requirements to ensure your wedding is legally recognized. The good news? You don’t need to be a resident of Canada or Alberta to legally tie the knot here! However, there are a few steps you’ll need to complete to ensure everything is official.

Banff Marriage Requirements: What You Need to Know

Step 1: Apply for a Marriage License

Before you can say “I do,” you and your partner must obtain a marriage license. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Visit a registry agent office in Alberta to apply for a marriage license.
  • Both you and your partner must be present and provide valid identification.
  • If either of you was previously married and divorced, you must bring proof of your divorce decree.
  • If you are widowed, no additional documents are required.
  • Marriage licenses remain valid for 90 days from the date of issue and must be used within Alberta.

Where to Get a Marriage License in Banff

You can obtain your marriage license at The Banff Registry, located at:

Address: 103-211 Bear St, Banff, Alberta

Operating Hours:

  • Tuesday to Friday: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Saturday: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Closed Sundays, Mondays, statutory holidays, and Saturdays of long weekends.

It’s recommended to email ahead to confirm their hours, especially if you’re planning your visit around a holiday. You can find more details on their website: The Banff Registry.

Step 2: Choose a Religious or Civil Ceremony

You have two options for your wedding ceremony:

  • Religious Ceremony: A registered religious clergy member, who is authorized by Alberta Vital Statistics, can perform your ceremony.
  • Civil Ceremony: A marriage commissioner, appointed by the Alberta Government, can officiate your wedding.

Step 3: Find an Officiant

Your ceremony must be performed by a licensed officiant. If you haven’t chosen one yet, Service Alberta provides a list of officiants based on your location.

Want someone close to you to officiate? A friend or family member can apply to become a temporary marriage commissioner for your special day. You can find more details on how they can apply here.

Step 4: Choose Two Adult Witnesses

Alberta law requires two adult witnesses (18 years or older) to be present at your ceremony.

Planning an intimate elopement and not bringing guests? No worries! As a photographer, I can act as one of your witnesses, and I can also help arrange for a second witness if needed.

Step 5: Consider a Symbolic Ceremony

If you’d prefer to skip the legal steps in Alberta, another option is to get legally married in your home province or country before your trip and then have a symbolic ceremony in Banff. This approach allows you to fully enjoy your elopement without worrying about paperwork while still experiencing the magic of exchanging vows in the Rockies.
