Vancouver Island Elopement Tips: What You Need to Know Before You Plan

Elopements

Tofino Styled Bridal Shoot - Shell Beach - Vancouver Island elopement

Planning a Vancouver Island elopement is a simple process overall, but there are a few key details you’ll want to understand before you start planning your day.

First, you’ll need a marriage license. This is the legal document you’ll sign on your elopement day. In BC, you can pick one up from places like London Drugs, and it’s valid for 90 days, so make sure you get it within three months of your date.

You’ll also need two witnesses present at your Vancouver Island elopement ceremony. If you’re planning something just the two of you, this is easy to work around. Your vendors (like your photographer) can sign, and I can always help arrange a second witness if needed.

Eloping doesn’t mean excluding your people, it just means being intentional about how you include them. I’ve seen couples bring handwritten letters from loved ones or plan a call later in the day once they’re back in service.

Permits are another thing to look into when planning a Vancouver Island elopement. Some locations across Vancouver Island, especially parks and protected areas, require a permit for ceremonies. It’s always worth double checking your specific location ahead of time. For example, if you have your heart set on a city park, have a look at the City of Victoria’s wedding guidelines.

Vancouver Island Elopement Tips

1. Be prepared for West Coast weather

Weather on Vancouver Island changes quickly, sometimes within the same hour. You might get sun, fog, wind, and rain all in one day.

Plan layers, bring a jacket, and don’t be afraid of the elements. The moody skies and mist are part of what makes a Vancouver Island elopement so unique. Some of the best photos happen when you lean into it instead of trying to avoid it. Having something small like hand warmers tucked away can help too.

2. Plan your travel (especially ferries)

If you’re coming from the mainland, ferries are part of your Vancouver Island elopement plan and they can impact your timeline.

Booking with BC Ferries is highly recommended, especially in peak season. If you’re traveling without a reservation, give yourself extra time and aim for an earlier sailing than you actually need.

3. Choose a location that matches your pace

One of the best parts of planning a Vancouver Island elopement is the variety of locations available. From beaches in Tofino to rugged coastline in Ucluelet, there’s something for every couple.

Think about how you want your day to feel. If you want something relaxed and simple, choose a location that doesn’t require much effort to get to. If you’re up for more of an adventure, there are plenty of options for that too.

4. Build your timeline around light

Lighting plays a huge role in how your Vancouver Island elopement looks and feels.

Sunrise and sunset offer softer, more flattering light, while midday can be harsh, especially on open beaches. Planning your ceremony or portraits around golden hour is one of the easiest ways to elevate your photos.

5. Have a simple backup plan

Even when the forecast looks good, Vancouver Island weather can shift quickly.

You don’t need to overplan your Vancouver Island elopement, but having a flexible mindset and one backup option nearby can make a big difference. A second beach, forest trail, or sheltered spot is usually enough.

6. Make it more than just a ceremony

A Vancouver Island elopement gives you the freedom to create a day that actually feels like you.

You’re not tied to a traditional timeline, which means you can slow things down and enjoy the experience. That might look like grabbing coffee together in the morning, having a picnic after your ceremony, or heading out for dinner somewhere local.

Vancouver Island is one of those places that doesn’t need much added to it. The landscape does the heavy lifting, you just get to show up and experience it.
