Eloping in Banff, Alberta: 10 Essential Steps

2023-07-20_0001.jpg

For couples seeking a breathtaking and intimate experience, eloping in Banff, Alberta, Canada, offers a magical backdrop of picturesque landscapes and serene wilderness. As a wedding and elopement photographer, I understand the importance of capturing these special moments in the most stunning settings. To ensure that your elopement in Banff is an unforgettable and seamless experience, here are ten essential steps you need to take before your big day.

1. Research Banff as Your Dream Elopement Destination

Banff National Park is a world-renowned destination, known for its majestic mountains, turquoise lakes, and abundant wildlife. Before finalizing your decision to elope in Banff, research the park’s seasons, weather conditions, and popular elopement spots. Familiarize yourself with local regulations and permits required for ceremonies and photography sessions to avoid any surprises.

2. Determine Your Ideal Time of Year

Each season in Banff offers its own unique charm. Whether you dream of a winter wonderland elopement or a vibrant summer celebration, consider the weather, availability of accommodations, and your preferred outdoor activities when choosing the perfect time of year.

3. Find a Skilled Elopement Photographer

A professional photographer experienced in Banff elopements is crucial to capturing the essence of your special day. Look for a photographer who has a portfolio that aligns with your style, and don’t hesitate to reach out for consultations before making your decision.

4. Plan Your Elopement Timeline

Create a detailed timeline for your elopement day, considering the best times for lighting and scenery. Discuss your plans with your photographer to ensure they can capture all the essential moments while blending seamlessly into your schedule.

5. Scout Stunning Elopement Locations

Banff is filled with breathtaking locations for elopements, from scenic mountain vistas to hidden lakes. Work with your photographer to identify the perfect spots that match your vision. Remember that some locations may require hiking, so be prepared for some physical challenges.

6. Permits

To have a legally recognized elopement in Banff, ensure you obtain all the necessary permits and permissions. Your photographer can guide you through this process and help you secure the appropriate paperwork. CLICK HERE to learn more about wedding ceremony permits that are required in Banff National Park. CLICK HERE to learn more on permits required in the Town of Banff.

7. Plan for the Unpredictable Weather

Banff’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains. Prepare for any weather conditions by dressing in layers and having backup plans for outdoor ceremonies if needed.

8. Hire your Vendors

Work with local vendors who have experience in Banff elopements. From florists to hair and makeup artists, choosing local professionals will ensure they are familiar with the area and can accommodate your elopement needs.

9. Consider Your Guests (if any)

If you plan to have a few guests, ensure they have proper accommodations and transportation in place. Inform them about the terrain and weather conditions, so they are well-prepared for the journey.

10. Embrace the Moment

Above all, remember that your elopement is about celebrating your love in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Embrace the breathtaking surroundings and the intimacy of the occasion. Relax, be present, and let your love story unfold naturally, while your photographer captures every precious moment.

Conclusion…

Eloping in Banff, Alberta, Canada, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will be etched in your memories forever. As a wedding and elopement photographer, I highly recommend following these ten essential steps to ensure a seamless and extraordinary elopement in this stunning Canadian paradise. Vanessa & Joseph/ Day After Session / Claybank

Why I recommend a Day After Session…

I love when couples add a day after session to their wedding package. These sessions are a little (a lot) less busy and less stressful than the wedding day, so it gives us time to get creative with no pressure, and no timeline to stick to.

Unfortunately the post-wedding regret I hear the most is, “it feels like the day went by so fast, and we wish we had taken time to stop and take it all in.” I think every couple should have enough time on their day to really appreciate the moment. Usually, this happens when we take 15 minutes away from the reception to do the sunset portrait session. I try to make this moment special, and to remind you to take it all in. But if we’re rushed for time, you won’t even have a second to breathe and enjoy the day you worked so hard to prepare for. If we have built-in day-after time, there will be less pressure to take photos, and more time to relish. You won’t have to rush through your dinner, or miss your cocktail hour. You’ll actually get to spend time with your friends and loved ones!

VANESSA & JOSEPH

Vanessa & Joseph were married in the early spring of 2022 & decided to keep their day very intimate. They celebrated their wedding day with a few family members at an afternoon ceremony + celebration & decided against hiring a photographer on the day all together. They then took off for their honeymoon in the tropics before returning to SK and meeting me in Claybank, SK for this gorgeous sunset bridal session.

A few kind words from Vanessa regarding this bridal session are below:

“Sarah Rolles is such an amazing, talented, kind, and professional photographer. My husband and I are naturally super awkward at heart, but Sarah helped us come out of our shells and made us feel beautiful. We called her our “Hype Woman” during the entire photoshoot. Our wedding photos turned out even better than we had imagined, and we are super grateful!!! We hope to hire her again to take more photos of our growing family. We highly recommend hiring her. You won’t regret it, and you’ll have the time of your life!”

Selkie Seal Bridal – Ucluelet, BC

This beautiful bridal shoot was shot in BC’s pristine coastline near the small town of Ucluelet featuring the views from the communities famous Wild Pacific Trail.

It is inspired by the Celtic folklore of the Selkie. The tale of a seal that can shed it’s skin and temporarily  take on human form. A classic fable with mystical vibes it is a popular story still  told today mostly on island and rural coastal communities.

The dried floral bouquet (designed by: Crab Apple Floral Design), long veil & vintage lace dress was carefully styled to portray those classic west coast vibes the area is known for.

This styled bridal shoot was shot during a peaceful pink sunset on the black rocks & cliffs that can be found across the coastline of this small tourist & fishing community. It not only showcases the sunsets that the area is famous for but also features some local wildlife. We were blessed to witness plus capture two bald eagles fishing above us with Black Rock Resort beautifully displayed behind them.
